Improved pit characterization for remote field testing of carbon steel tubes

Remote Field Testing (RFT) is an effective and economical method for the examination of metal tubes such as those found in heat exchangers and boilers. RFT is commonly used for examining carbon steel and now stainless steel tubes. RFT allows metal loss damage to be detected during turnarounds, reducing the risk of unexpected and costly forced shutdowns. This paper describes recent advances in RFT techniques and instrumentation that have resulted in increased sensitivity to pits.
