摘要

Mission-critical machinery and associated test and maintenance equipment have not always been designed to speed repairs and minimize down-time. Life-cycle cost analysis and maintenance planning are not new ideas. However, we stand in a dawn of new sensing and communication technologies. Are we applying these technologies with best efficacy and return-on-investment for new hulls and retrofits? Are sensors revealing or a source of new maintenance problems? What are the best ways to process, present, and store data to provide the fastest decision assistance? Do our procedures and tools empower or hinder crews in speeding completion of maintenance and minimizing cost? This paper explores these questions through an example: vibration monitoring for USCG and USN vessels.
