Planar images of acetone and OH laser-inducedfluorescence were made at 8 to 13 spanwise locations in theflow downstream of a bluff body flameholder with normal fueljet injection. This study was initiated with the goals of obtaininga better understanding the jet mixing and penetration process,the size of the recirculation zone, the shear layer oscillationamplitude and frequency, and the three-dimensional flamestructure behind a bluff body flameholder. A good semiquantitativeunderstanding of the complex time-dependentthree-dimensional flow field was obtained using these scalars asflow tracers.
