These years, the desulphurization of hot metal pretreatment has become one of the indispensable processes for the production of high quality steel. The present processes have many demerits. In order to improve the efficiency and reduce the temperature decrease in the process, a new desulphurization process by using electromagnetic stirring was proposed and investigated experimentally. In the experiment CaO-10%CaF_2 flux was charged on the free surface of a molten metal and the desulphurization experiments were conducted with and without the imposition of electromagnetic stirring. The experiments under different stirring intensities and stirring types were conducted. The changes of sulfur content in the molten iron with respect to time were obtained, and then the values of volumetric mass transfer coefficients of sulfur in molten iron phase under different experimental conditions were determined. The effect of EMS on the desulphurization rate was also discussed .
