The precipitation behavior of gamma prime phase in single crystal superalloy DD3 directionally solidified with a DC electric field is investigated and qualitative results of precipitation with various electric fields and thermal conditions are obtained. With increase of the electric field, the size of gamma prime is smaller and the distribution is more uniform at high precipitation temperature. While at the low precipitation temperature, the size of gamma prime is large but the size distribution is uniform. The experiment result shows that the electric field accelerates the nucleation of gamma prime phase, as well as the coarsening followed instantly; the size and morphology of gamma prime are determined by the two stages corporately.
