As a part of the Central Artery/Tunnel (CA/T) Project, Boston, MA, a four-lane roadway-immersed tube tunnel was constructed to carry Interstate 90 under Boston Harbor. This paper presents the relative site geology, subsurface conditions and engineering characteristics along the tunnel alignment. It discusses some of the geotechnical and structural issues considered for the design of the tunnel components, as well as construction methods to sink and place the tubes on the harbor.
