Amphoteric starch has been proposed to be suitable for papermaking system with widely used secondary fiber and close circulation of white water. It is further beneficial to charge stabilization of wet end system and stable running of the paper machine as wet-end additives for its particular electrochemical properties and synergistic effect produced by anion-cation which could overcome the deficiency of cationic and anionic starch in applying. [1] Advantages of amphoteric starch also include improving retention, drainage, enhancing paper strength with little dosage, et al.In this study, phosphate amphoteric starches are synthesized by semi-dry process.The effects of modifier on starch structure, morphology, performance and strengthening effects on secondary fiber are also discussed.
