Mesoporous ZSM-5 was facilely and economically prepared by NaOH treatment of ZSM-5 synthesized without template, and used for selective synthesis of 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene (2,6-DMN) in a stainless fixed-bed reactor at 400 o C. The results show that new mesopores are formed resulting from the desilication when ZSM-5 treated by NaOH solution. The catalytic activities and lifetime were obviously enhanced with increase of the treatment time. About 37% 2-methylnaphthalene conversion, higher than 5.3% on parent ZSM-5, was obtained at 10.25 h on mesoporous ZSM-5 prepared by 8 h NaOH-treatment. It is thought that mesopores in alkaline-treated ZSM-5 result in higher catalytic activities and longer lifetime.
