Collagen-chitosan compound films were prepared with mixture solution of collagen, chitosan and glycerine after extraction of collagen from tannery chrome shavings and preparation of chitosan from chitin. Mechanical properties, as well as the properties of water vapour permeability and water absorption of the films were investigated. Factors affecting those properties of the films were studied, including molecular weight distribution of collagen hydrolysate, quantity of glycerine added, ratio of collagen to chitosan (w/w), pH and temperature of mixture solution. Orthogonal experiment showed that the mechanical properties of the films reached optimum under the following reaction conditions: glycerine 2.0% of the mixture solution of collagen and chitosan (w/w), ratio of collagen to chitosan 0.16(w/w), pH of mixture solution 3.81, and temperature of mixture solution 50℃.
