Free Formaldehyde Scavenger of Leather and Fur

Based on a great deal of references, considering the characteristic of leather and fur productions, the reaction capacity of 18 kinds of small molecule compounds on formaldehyde in the aqueous solution were studied, and then the chosen compounds with strong reaction capacity were applied to scavenge free formaldehyde in leather and fur tanned by formaldehyde. The ability of ten kinds of extracts to scavenge leather free formaldehyde also was studied. The polymer with multi amidogroups was synthesized by monomers with acylamide groups and vinyl polymer groups in the condition of soap-free emulsion, then Hofmann degradation. The polymer was applied singly or combining with some small molecule compounds to capture free formaldehyde in formaldehyde-tanned leather and fur. Results show that (1) Sodium bisulfite, sodium sulfite, sodium hydrosulfite, hydrogen peroxide, ammonium chloride and sulfate have good capability of catching free formaldehyde in leather; hydrogen peroxide, sodium hydrosulfite, sodium sulfite, ammonium sulfate have good capability in fur; (2) Condensed vegetable tannin extracts, such as mimosa, quebracho, larch extract, were good in capturing free formaldehyde, and hydrolysable vegetable extracts have little capability of catching free formaldehyde; (3) The synthesized polymer with multi aminogroups have obvious capability of capturing free formaldehyde and other functions such as filling and assisting dyeing and without bad effect on fur products, the mixture of 5% polymer and 1% ammonium sulfate as well as 2% ammonium acetate has a better comprehensive function; (4) It is not the more dosage, the better capturing effect, because excessive scavenger can make formaldehyde tanned leather detan and reduce capturing ratio.
