Eco-leather: Chromium-free Leather Production Using Titanium, Oligomeric Melamine- Formaldehyde Resin, and Resorcinol Tanning Agents and the Properties of the Resulting Leathers

Thechromiumsalttanningsystem,whichisstillthemostpopularleathertanningprocedure,isundercontinuouspressurefromenvironmentalgroupsandinternationalregulations.Therefore,formanyyears,numerousexperimentshavebeencarriedoutonchromium-freeleatherproduction.Inthisstudy,newlyproducedsyntheticandinorganicchemicalswereusedastanningandpre-tanningagentsasanalternativetoachromiumtanningagent.Thisnewtitaniumbasedtanningagent,obtainedfromprocessingwastesfromtheindustryofnonferrousmetals,wasusedasamaintanningagent.Inaddition,anoligomericmelamine-formaldehyderesinandresorcinoltypepre-polymerwereusedaspre-tanningagentsfortheproductionofchromium-freeleathers.Physicaltestsandchemicalanalysisoftheproducedchromium-freeleathersgavecomparableresultstoleatherstannedwithbasicchromiumsulphate.
