The material and energy flows in an integrated steel plant can be very complicated due to their complex interactions within the plant and between the plant and the surrounding industries.Thus,a system analysis tool is helpful for governing the whole production system and to avoid the optimization of sub-systems.A separate research field,Process Integration,was formulated in the mid-’70s to study the problems of global energy optimization of industrial systems.In Sweden,a knowledge centre,Centre for Process Integration in Steelmaking-PRISMA,was formed in 2006 to give attention to the research within this particular area.A number of Nordic steelmakers have joined the centre to develop the methods and to learn more about how to utilize process integration for process optimization and decisionmaking.It has been shown that process integration is a powerful and relatively easy-to-use tool with practical applications.In this paper,most recent methods which have been developed and evaluated at the PRISMA will be described.Some experiences on how to use this tool for improving energy and material efficiency,minimizing CO2 emission and production cost will be presented.
