As the present cycle simulation program for turbocharged diesel engines can not meet the demand of the real-time simulation, a special model of four-stroke marine diesel engines based on the technologies of the co-operation between the characteristic maps and the thermodynamic equations is proposed. The model is a modularized structure and the modules describing engines components can be added to it easily. The simulation results of the steady state and the transient performance show a good correspondence to measured reference data. The simulation experiments demonstrate the model by using the method of a characteristic map instead of cycle calculation gives a basic real-time simulation environment to analyze dynamic performance and design controller.
