Green buildings have received great attention in big cities recently. Aims are to protect the environment, save energy through better provisions of natural ventilation and utilization of daylight, water consumption and waste management. Because every green building has an atrium, which would cause smoke spreading, so the problem on how to deal with fire safety, especially in complying with the existing prescriptive fire codes was bringed forward and evacuation design under smoke was identified to be a key issue. In this paper, 26 atria of green buildings in Shanghai and Hangzhou were surveyed and studied. The simulation results show some atria of green buildings have fire safety problems. But providing more emergency exits or widening them are not encouraged, because it would give security problems. So installing a smoke exhaust system with good fire safety management and the design of integrating the evacuation time with the smoke filling time under different scenarios was putted forward, for installing a smoke exhaust system can keep the smoke layer high, and the better fire safety management would provide adequate safety.
