Direct oxidation of propane to acrolein could be an interesting alternative to propene oxidation. This reaction has been attempted by using many kinds of catalysts-most of which are unsupported mixed oxides containing molybdenum, vanadium and other transition metals. The yield of reaction over most of the catalyst, however, is fairly low. Maximum yields of ~ 13% reported by Kim et al. were achieved under conditions where significant amount of propene formed by gas phase dehydrogenation of propane was present. In this work an active catalyst was developed for this reaction. The influence of calcining atmospheres on the performance of the MoV_(0.2)Te_(0.1)/SiO_2 catalyst was investigated. The catalysts were characterised by XRD, TPR, XPS and microprobe Raman spectroscopy.
