Performance of Plate-type Copper Catalyst for Steam Reforming of Methanol on an Aluminum Base Prepared by Electroless Plating

Steam reforming of methanol is attracting interest as a reaction that generates hydrogen for fuel cells. As it involves a relatively large endothermic reaction, the reformer requires an effective exchange of heat energy and a quick load response. A wall-type reactor, which metallic wall is catalyzed, is one of the reactors that meet the requirements. We have previously simulated that the wall-type reactor effectively exchanges heat energy by conductional heat transfer, even with highly exothermic or endothermic reaction heat, and promptly makes a load response due to a decreased pressure drop. Application of the system in a reactor involving reformers for power generator system by fuel cells is expected. This research studied the catalytic properties for steam reforming of methanol over plate-type copper catalysts prepared by electroless plating, with a view to the development of high performance plate-type catalyst for methnol reformer. Furthermore, the physicochemical properties of the plated layers were also examined with respect to their effect on reforming performance.
