Currently operating desulfurization, based on the SO_2 scribing with lime or limestone, is costly process requiring a large space with complicated facilities and disposal of the used sorbents. The direct catalytic reduction of SO_2 with CO has received much attention because this dry desulfurization method yields a product of commercial value in the form of almost pure elemental sulfur, and generates no secondary pollution. Furthermore, the process is single-stage and is easier to design and operate. Several types of catalysts have been employed for catalyzing the reaction between SO_2 and CO to form elemental sulfur, including alumina-supported transition metals, perovskite oxides, ceria-transition metal composites, and lanthanum oxysulfide. The present work deals with the use of iron-niobate catalysts for catalysing the reduction of sulfur dioxide to sulfur, from which strong synergistic phenomena in both catalytic activity and catalytic selectivity have been observed for the iron-niobates.
