Recent advances in computer technology have increased the possibilities for effective management information systems (MIS) to support farm decisions. Two potential applications of MIS are described: decision support systems (DSS) and expert systems (ES). The current challenge in building MIS is to incorporate DSS and ES to create an effective tool for the farm manager. An integrated DSS-ES system to support sow replacement decisions is presented. The method of acquiring the knowledge for the ES and the validation of the integrated system are described. Formal validation results indicate a high correspondence between the system's ranking of 30 blind test scenarios with the rankings provided by two experts.
