A flow sensor is described, which uses the deflection of an elastic beam by fluid flow, to deform strain guages. The flow sensor has been calibrated using both conventional and optical strain gauges. By measurement of strain in two orthogonal directions, the sensor measures both the magnitude and direction of air velocity, by means of vectorial addition of the flow components in two orthogonal directions. The sensor is able to measure over a flow range of 0 to 30 m/s, with a sensitivity of 0.0050+-0.0002 units of optical strain s/m and 0.0062 +-0.0001 units of conventional resistive strain s/m and an optical resolution of 1.419 m/s and conventional strain gauge resolution of 0.64 m/s.
