Transportation problems involve various types of uncertainty. Existence of uncertainty often brings about significant consequences in terms of risks and credibility of analysis. Uncertainty and information have the dual relation: uncertainty is the state that demands more information. Compared with the advances made in our ability to process information, our ability to handle unceratinty has not advanced as much. In order to utilize today's information processing technology fully, we need to understand how to deal with uncertainty. This paper presents the emerging theories of uncertainty and clarifies how these theories help plan and design advanced technologies in transportation.
