In 1992, a number of conventional signalized intersections in Oakland County, Michigan were switched to an innovative traffic control system known as "Fast- Trac" (Faster and Safer Travel through Traffic Routing & Advanced Control), as a part of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) deployment. The effectiveness of Fast- Trac is demonstrated in this paper by analyzing accident data ("before" and "after" accident rates) of 13 Fast- Trac signalized intersections for the years 1990-1995. In addition, severity rates of Fast-Trac signal intersections for the last four years were calculated to examine severity trends. A non-parametric statistical test was used to analyze the data. Results indicate that difference between mean "Left-turn" before and after accident rate was significant, where as in case of "Total" accident rate, the difference was not significant.
