This project evaluated the performance of nine passive treatment methodsrnby studying 137 treatment units in eight eastern states. Performance wasrnnormalised according to construction cost, projected service life andrnkilograms of acid load treated. Results were dimensioned as $/kg of acidrnload treated/year. These costs were then compared to those of chemicalrntreatment. Sites that achieved acid load reductions at costs below those ofrnchemical treatment were considered successful. In addition to evaluatingrnthe performance of the treatment methods, this paper describes thernvarious passive treatment systems, their applications and performancerndata for individual treatment units.
