There are booming markets in molded paper products in China and Taiwan in recent years due to a ban on the use of Styrofoam containers. Products in the form of paper dishes, soup bowls, lunch boxes, and various fast food containers all have the basic quality requirements of being greaseproofing and waterproofing. This study investigated the operational parameters of fluorinated greaseproofing chemicals on molded paper products, such as the effects of the blending ratio of softwood and hardwood pulps; various doses of a low molecular weight and highly cationic coagulant; degrees of AKD sizing; various doses of a high molecular weight anionic flocculent, etc., on the degrees of greaseproofing and waterproofing provided. Results show that softwood pulp had better greaseproofing and waterproofing efficiencies than did hardwood pulp. Aluminum ions in excess of 30 mg/L proportionally interfered with the fluorochemical, and the degrees of greaseproofing and waterproofing of the products showed the same trend. Oversizing had an adverse effect on the fluorochemical and tended to lower the degree of greaseproofing. The wet-end chemical mechanism of paper molding was found to be similar to that of traditional cylinder formers. Thus, with application of a low molecular weight and highly cationic coagulant followed by a high molecular weight anionic flocculent, optimal degrees of greaseproofing and waterproofing in molded paper products were achieved.
