Succesful companies in any business are tageting to be customer focused, knowledge-driven and brand-owning companies. In pulp and paper industry, the skills of the operating personnel is the most important key success factor. The experienced operators and managers are capable to make fast - and correct - decisions, to solve problems and to recover from process disturbances. This is inevitable to fulfil the customer demands of end-product quality and reliable delivery times. Now, one could easily raise a question, how to capitalise this invaluable asset, with help of today's systems technology - industrial IT. First of all, it is important to understand the psychology of the real production world. The people operating the mill will not volunteer, to start writing the instructions for different situations. And to write instructions once and let it be, does not support the needs of continuous improvement. This means that there must be a way, to continuously develop a knowledge databank, create a pressure to the operating personnel to keep it updated over the time and motivate them by giving something as a trade.
