The aim of this study was to assess the applicability of a novel forming method called Air Dynamic Forming (ADF) to the production of paper with properties similar to those of paper produced by conventional wet forming, using low-energy mechanical pulp as raw material. Secondly, the hot-pressing variables were optimized to improve strength properties of paper made from this pulp. Experiments were performed with spruce HT-CTMP in the specially designed laboratory apparatus based on the air forming principle and hot press. It was found that the ADF method provides better formation and optical properties at similar strength for the sheets made from coarse mechanical pulp as the ordinary wet forming with hot pressing.
