This work presents the application of three different bio-inspired algorithms (genetic algorithm, evolution strategies and artificial immune systems) to design a filter and an air-waveguide coupling based on electromagnetic band gap (EBG) structures. The EBG modeling is accomplished by using a 2D numerical algorithm based on the finite element method (FEM). Another contribution of this work is a benchmark of these bio-inspired algorithms applied to the optimization of some electromagnetic devices, considering convergence efficiency and computational requirements.
