A LOVE AFFAIR WITH SULFUR

Desulfurization of hot metal is the metallurgical process used to remove deleterious sulfur from molten iron prior to its conversion to steel. Sulfur adversely affects the mechanical properties of steel and must be lowered to ultra-low levels (.010 - .001 % or less) in order to achieve the properties necessary for today's thin gauge, high performance steels. While specifications for sulfur in steel continue to decrease, the sulfur contents of raw materials available to produce iron continue to increase, further exacerbating the problem.rnFortunately, SULFUR LOVES MAGNESIUM and the product of the marriage (magnesium sulfide) readily separates from molten iron for easy removal! As an iron desulfurizer, magnesium has no peer. Magnesium is the most effective and efficient commercially available iron desulfurizer in use today. It is not, however, always the least expensive desulfurizer.
