Multiparticulate drug delivery systems can promote a broader and more predictable distribution of drug containing particles in the GI tract and are able to remain in intestinal segments for a period up to 24 hours. These characteristics can reduce local and systemic adverse effects of certain drugs. In this work, carnauba wax microspheres containing ketoprofen were developed by the emulsion-congealing technique. Microspheres exhibited good rheological properties and a continuous drug release for 24 hours. A drug permeation assay using the everted intestinal sac method with three different intestinal segments from Wistar rats was conducted. This assay demonstrated that permeation of ketoprofen is prolonged, continuous and dependent on the drug release from the microspheres.
