Epoxies have long been the standard for corrosion resistance in coatings, but due to rising prices fueled by growing raw material costs and increasing global demand, a need for an alternative corrosion resistant powder coating chemistry has developed. The completion of a study involving over twenty different binder chemistries has narrowed the field of feasible alternatives based on both their economic structure and their corrosion performance on various combinations of available substrates, pretreatments, and rinses. Using ASTM B 117 Standard Method of Salt Spray (Fog) Testing and ASTM D 1654-79a Standard Method for Evaluation of Painted or Coated Specimens Subjected to Corrosive Environments, over five hundred specimens were reviewed to determine the binder chemistries that excel in corrosion resistance on seven different substrates.
