STABILIZING COLORS IN WATER BASED WOOD STAINS WITH SYNTHETIC SILICATES

This paper details the use of synthetic silicate additives as color stabilizers and color enhancers. Water based wood stains were formulated and applied to various substrates. Color analysis shows substantial darkening of the stain indicating improved pigment spacing. It is hypothesized that the use of synthetic silicates in combination with polymeric thickeners allows the synthetic silicate to "staple" the polymeric thickeners together, creating a stable matrix which prevents the re-agglomeration or re-flocculatioin of pigments.
