NOVEL WATERBORNE ALKYD RESIN TECHNOLOGY FOR INDUSTRIAL COATING APPLICATIONS

A novel and cost-effective waterborne alkyd resin technology has been developed which utilizes Epoxidized Vegetable Oil and their derivatives as a major component of resins. Hydroxyl-functional water-dispersible resins have been synthesized by controlled polyesterification of Epoxidized Soybean Oil (ESO) and epoxidized soy-fatty acid methyl ester (ESFAME), mono and di-functional acids and monomeric polyols. Resins varying in molecular weight and hydroxyl content have been prepared and characterized. These resins were functionalized with ionizable acid groups and their aqueous dispersions have been prepared. Water-borne coatings have been formulated from this novel class of selected resin dispersions to demonstrate their potential industrial applications. The study shows that it is possible to derive wide range of such by effectively controlling the competing esterification and etherification reactions during the course of their synthesis. These resins can fully or partly replace conventional polyesters or alkyds from coating formulations. The benefits of this novel technology and its potential applications are highlighted.
