The American Society for Engineering Management (ASEM) has developed the Engineering Management Body of Knowledge (EMBOK) using an academically rigorous process. The Engineering Management Body of Knowledge Guide (EMBOK Guide) which is published by the American Society for Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and now taken over by ASEM needs to be updated with the current trends in the field. As the body of knowledge is a foundation for developing and updating certification exams, an extensive literature review was conducted on various professional societies that developed certification exams and refined their body of knowledge based on a methodological research approach. A study on various test development standards set forth by American Psychological Association, American Educational Research Association (AERA), and the National Council on Measurement in Education (NCME) were also reviewed. This paper will describe the methodology that should be used to update the EMBOK based on the results of the study.
