At the Black Bear Preparation Plant the clean coal product from the spirals traditionally reported to high frequency screens with 0.6 mm openings, for removal of high ash clay fines. It is known that screening operation has intrinsic inefficiencies which misplace clean coal to screen underflow. It was the aim of this project to capture the maximum amount of spiral clean coal as possible while still removing the high ash clay material found in the spiral product. In addition, reduction of circulating load and plant maintenance/unscheduled downtime were projected to be benefits of this project. After the plant upgrade the maintenance related to the high frequency screens was eliminated and an additional 2.27 tph of fine clean coal was recovered. This resulted in a payback period of less than one year.
