Analysis of Wind Power Integration in the Flint Hills Area of Kansas

This paper will present an analysis of the effect of wind generation in the Flint Hills area of Kansas on the electric transmission system. Three sites identified by a feasibility study as being among the best in terms of wind resource were studied using two years of wind speed data. Power flow software was used to integrate these three sites into the forecast Southwest Power Pool system model for the summer peak of 2005. Simulations were run for days with significant fluctuations in wind speed. The affects on transmission line loading, generation load following, and transmission voltage were analyzed and will be presented.
