A proportion of road traffic accidents are caused by driver inattention, linked to the use of secondary in-vehicle controls. Consequently the overall design of controls must strive to ensure that their operation and monitoring does not place excessive demands on the driver, whose primary task is the safe operation of the vehicle. In recent years the number and variety of non-safety critical controls in vehicles has increased with the implementation of new technologies and driver information systems. However, the amount of space to locate in-vehicle controls has remained fairly constant often resulting in small controls within cluttered consoles. An alternative approach to the use of conventional in-vehicle controls is described, together with the human factors issues involved.
