In the present work, multiple and single antenna receivers in the context of ultra-wideband communications are investigated from different perspectives. The Cramer-Rao bounds for the channel parameters are derived, taking into account the presence of interpath interference. Additionally, the bit error rate results at the output of a Rake receiver in the presence of estimation errors are compared. It is shown that the theoretical advantage of employing multiple antenna receivers vanishes for the case of practical selective Rake receivers and in the presence of dense multipath propagation.
