Flight-testing in high dynamic aircraft poses numerous challenges both for the test engineer and the instrumentation he or she is operating. Over the past several years, the Ohio University Avionics Engineering Center has been developing an instrumentation suite for its AeroVodochody L-29 Delfin jet. The L-29 is a 1960's era fighter-trainer capable of high altitude, high speed and high dynamic flight. This paper will describe the work conducted by Ohio University in the development of a truth reference system for the L-29. GPS receivers and inertial navigation units have been installed and networked with data collection computers and assorted required peripherals. A variety of practical issues will be discussed in the paper. These issues range from data time tagging and limitations on the interface buses to the physical endurance of the pilot and flight engineer in high-g environments. Flight test results will also be discussed.
