Considering the low bending strength of the ordinary tabular EKG and low efficiency of drainage in the late period of electro-osmosis in combination with vacuum preloading method, six laboratory tests were researched using improved tabular EKG and new-style tubular EKG in a self-developed device. The electrode conversion and applying stepped voltage were used in the laboratory tests. By monitoring drainage rate, current, moisture content, settlement, and strength, the treatment effect of these methods were compared with each other. It showed that: (1) The drainage amount of soil treatment using the improved EKG is 2,054 ml. It is much larger than the drainage amount using the ordinary EKG. The drainage effect of the improved EKG is better. (2) The effective potential and current intensity using the improved tabular EKG process better than tubular EKG, but drainage rate and the drainage amount using the tubular EKG are larger than the improved tabular EKG in the early 10 hours. Therefore, the effect of the test in the further studies can be improved, if the above two EKG electrodes can be used together for marine clay treatment. (3) In comparison to applying 20 V constantly, the technique of stepped voltage decreased the decay rate of current, which also caused the increasing of drainage amount and electroosmotic efficiency in the late period of experiment. Furthermore, reasonable stepped voltage applying plan is needed to meet the requirements of energy-saving, and therefore pose contributions to the improvement of electro-osmosis combined vacuum preloading method.
