Data Warehouses in Public Schools:Lessons Learned in an On-going Implementation

Over the last several years data warehouses and datamarts have been increasingly used in commercial businessenterprises to support decision making. However, thistechnology has not been as widely adopted in not-forprofitenterprises and public education in particular.Public education is coming under increased scrutiny asgrass-roots support for spending is on the wane andaccountability expectations for resource utilization areincreasing. Data warehousing can effectively supportdata-driven decision making and represents a logical areafor investment. This paper describes a partnershipbetween a major metropolitan university and a large urbanschool district to deploy a comprehensive studentcentereddata warehouse to support educators andadministrators in their day-to-day operations. It addressesmanagerial, technical, and political issues faced in theimplementation.
