Corrosion Mapping of Boiler and Heat Exchanger Tubes Using a Motorized Ultrasonic System

Plant operators want to know the full extent of the corrosion in a certain part or component - not just the lowest reading in that area or part. With innovative design and the advancements in electronics, computers and software coupled with new digital ultrasonic instruments, we now have tools that will accomplish this. One such tool is a motorized ultrasonic tube inspection system called the DARIS (Dynatron Automated Recording and Inspection System). It is used to perform real time corrosion mapping of boiler and heat exchanger tubes. The live B- and C-scan displays provides the user with immediate feed-back about the condition of the tube being inspected. This will enable the plant operator to take immediate remedial action required. This could then preempt any possible untimely outage or accident that could result from a tube leak. The system is comprised of a probe head with a rotating transducer, motor controller, digital ultrasonic unit and computer with dedicated software. The rotation and linear movements of the probe head is set and controlled by the user via the motor controller and computer software.
