Many agencies and consulting engineers are beginning to look for alternatives to what have become traditional trenchless methods. In some cases utility owners and their consultants are considering the use of rigid pipe to replace their existing underground water and sewer pipe. This presentation will provide an overview of the Tenbusch Insertion Method™ -one of the newest technologies in the trenchless replacement of existing pipe. This overview will cover the technology and how it works, along with a discussion of different job conditions and the different pipe materials that can be used. This new technology replaces the existing pipe with a new-segmented Vitrified Clay Pipe (VCP), Centrifugally Cast Fiberglass Reinforced Polyester Mortar (CCFRPM), Steel, Ductile Iron (DI), or Polymer Concrete (PC) jacking pipes. The existing pipe is cracked and pushed away from the new pipe being installed by the lead assembly. The segmented pipe is simultaneously pushed into place by the main jack. This method allows for the lead assembly to be advanced through the existing pipe independently of the advance of the new pipe column. The new pipe may be the same size or larger than the existing pipe.
