Integrated System Validation (ISV) investigates whether new control roomrndesigns are able to keep human performance within acceptable limits and support the safernoperation of nuclear power plants (NPP). A major problem in ISV is to establish reliablerndecision criteria for accepting or rejecting design solutions on the basis of humanrnperformance measurement. To solve this criterion problem, a calibration referencedrnvalidation approach is proposed, where operating crews are exposed to a calibrationrnprocedure on a representative NPP simulator before the validation itself. Duringrncalibration scenarios, human performance scores are registered frequently, while therndifficulty of the task is gradually increased until the control room operators are no longerrnable to handle the situation safely. Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) can thereby definernacceptable and unacceptable performance levels on the measurement scale. During thernvalidation, this knowledge is used to determine whether a new or modernized controlrnroom solution is acceptable, or should be rejected for safety reasons.
