This paper discusses the regulatory guidance recently introduced forrnimplementation by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for minimizingrnmalfunctions and upsets in safety-related instrumentation and control (I&C) systems inrnnuclear power plants caused by electromagnetic interference (EMI), radio-frequencyrninterference (RFI), and power surges. The engineering design, installation, and testingrnpractices deemed acceptable to U.S. NRC are described in Rev. 1 of Regulatory Guidern(RG) 1.180, "Guidelines for Evaluating Electromagnetic and Radio-Frequency in Safety-rnRelated Instrumentation and Control Systems" (May 2003). These engineering practicesrnprovide a well-established, systematic approach for ensuring electromagneticrncompatibility (EMC).
