Shoulder-launched Man Portable Air Defense Systemsrn(MANPADS) missiles are fast becoming the weapon ofrnchoice for ground personnel against aircraft. Highly effective,rneconomical, and widely proliferated worldwide, thesernweapons pose a serious threat to rotorcraft, which typicallyrnconduct operations that place them in harms way ofrnMANPADS during all mission phases. In recent conflicts,rndata collected involving MANPADS and aircraft suggestsrnthat a hit does not necessarily equate to a kill. In addition,rninnovative structural design concepts may improve thernchances of rotorcraft to survive MANPADS encounters,rnparticularly for larger airframes. This paper will describernthe methodology currently under development at Bell Helicopterrnto provide physics-based modeling and simulation ofrnaircraft structural response to MANPADS and HEI projectilerndetonations. The paper will discuss how the technology willrnbe used as a design tool to increase understanding of therndamage mechanisms, and how results may be used to developrnnew, more survivable structural concepts in a costeffectivernmanner.
