The advent of on-line databases and utilities is changing the way most process industries work, store and retrieve information. In filtration and separation, it is now possible to use a freely available on-line database to help in selecting, or eliminating, equipment. It is also possible to use on-line utilities to assist in the understanding of the performance of existing equipment; i.e. to elucidate important operating parameters, and those parameters may be used to provide simulation of equipment performance under operating conditions not yet tried. These simulations may then be used to optimize existing equipment throughout. Thus, the on-line utilities are of use in selection, modeling and simulation for various types of equipment. These facilities are available at www.filtration-and-separation.com and are free of charge. rnEquipment selection by the expert system is illustrated, together with an example of modeling analysis based on a filtering centrifuge; taking data from a test unit, with further simulation of the filtration, washing and drying stages of the process. The drying model used is that due to Zeitsch and the adaptation to an Internet facility has necessitated conversion from an analysis based on the error function to an approximation that can be easily represented on-line. The ease of use of the simulation and its possibilities for productivity analysis are illustrated.
