Oily wastewater is one of the most concerned and difficult problems in the industrial wastewater treatment. In recent years, it is become more important since the stringent discharge regulations has been implemented. Coalescence is one of the effective treatment methods in oily water treatment, but most of the coalescers or oil/water separators in use are plate form or fibrous bed, and the oil content in the effluent of which are usually 50 to 100mg/l. In this paper, a cartridge coalescer is studied under various testing conditions. The testing result indicates that the coalescer material and structure are of great impact on the coalescer performance, and from the orthogonal experiment, the best combination of materials is determined. However, there are many other factors affect the performance of the coalescer. The results show that the influent oil content do little effect on the performance but the flow rate do, that is mean, there is a maximum flow rate for the coalescer, under the experimental conditions, the maximum flow rate of the studied coalescer is 26.88m~3/h.m~2. Of course, the surfactant has fatal effect to coalescer, but through the experiment, it is find that the said coalescer has a certain degree of tolerance to the low IFT, the minimum can be reach to 10dynes/cm. All the results proved that the potential of the cartridge coalescer used in oily water treatment.
