In many industrial liquid filtration applications, the filter medium can be subjected to severernabrasive loading. This abrasion can be the result of the motion of hard sharp particulates in thernslurry against the cloth under high pressures. Alternatively, the abrasion can result from thernmechanical action of the filter medium against the permanent filter plant, such as thernmovement of the filter medium against the backplate in a filter press.rnWhatever the mechanism of abrasive damage, abrasion can limit the lifetime of the filterrnmedium, resulting in increased plant downtime and reduced process efficiency.rnMadison Filter has recently been trialing a solution to abrasion problems in the field, wherernabrasion can be problematic, and seriously limits the lifetime of the filter medium. Thisrnproduct is called Tuf-TexTM, a patented treatment that can be applied to standard textile basedrnfilter media to increase abrasion resistance. Tuf-TexTM is a specially formulated thermosettingrnresin system which is applied into a textile filter medium using standard textile coatingrntechniques, resulting in a new range of composite filter media.rnThe resin treatment has now been applied successfully to a range of woven and non-wovenrnfilter media manufactured from polypropylene, polyester and nylon, and extensive field trialsrnare now in operation.rnThis paper describes some of the experiences in the field with Tuf-TexTM finished filter mediarnin liquid filtration applications, by describing the development of a treated filter medium, andrnexperience with it in a field case study. A brief description of the process in question is given,rnincluding the filtration plant used. Details are presented of the resin impregnated filterrnmedium applied to these applications. Laboratory test data on the medium is presented whichrnillustrates the benefits of resin treatment, and finally the benefits obtained over untreatedrnmaterial, in the field, is addressed. Finally, conclusions are made about the future potential forrnthese resin treated media.
