The 'essence' or system world view of groupware is defined as the belief embedded in a system about how things are or should be. A classification scheme for system world view is proposed based on determinism, emergence, and the rational actor. A collection of groupware systems is classified using the proposed scheme. The congruence of a world view with the research, organization, and design can indicate the potential for success and failure. The study concludes that each system world view has specific strengths and weaknesses and some views are better suited for certain types of research and design.
