With the need to modify existing quarries, as well as open new ones, air dispersionmodeling will become more prevalent. Many grass root organization are becoming moreaggressive in challenging quarry expansion and opening. Thus, the burden falls on thequarry owner to prove that air quality impacts will not adversely affect its neighbors. TheISCST3 air dispersion model program allows for the determination of ambient air qualityimpacts from open pit and ground level sources. However, the model may produceartificially high ambient concentrations due to low mixing height values calculated by themeteorological preprocessor software. This paper will discuss how and when thisproblem occurs and why the use of AERMOD will alleviate future problems.
