Emissions from motor vehicles contribute a significant portion to the air pollutant emissionrninventory in Taiwan since 1990’s. Taiwan Environmental Protection Administration (TEPA)rnhas adopted several control strategies to reduce emission from mobile sources, both for newrnand in-use vehicles, and get clear progress in late 1990’s. Due to the rapid growth of in-usernvehicles, TEPA proposes more control measures to reduce emission from motorcycles,rngasoline vehicles, and diesel engines. Because of the most frequent occurrence of episoderndays in southern Taiwan air basin, these measures are developed and expected to bernimplemented in this air basin in coming future. This paper discusses the candidate controlrnmeasures for in-use gasoline vehicles.rnThere are five measures designed for in-use gasoline vehicles, which include passenger car,rntaxi, and light-duty gasoline truck. Control measures for these vehicles have been evaluatedrnbased on emission reduction potential and cost-effectiveness. The data indicated that thernenhanced smoke check program shows a moderate equivalent emission abatement (EEA)rnpotential and poor cost-effectiveness. Incentive program has high EEA potential and goodrncost-effectiveness. The remote sensing program also shows good EEA potential andrnmoderate cost-effectiveness. The other two measures have rare EEA potential and poorrncost-effectiveness.
